Interventions Operations – Well Site Supervisor

Course

About the Course

This course is part of the Track 1: Well Site Supervisor Development Program. Well Site Supervisor Development Program - Track 1. Well interventions typically fall into three categories: 1) Fix an existing problem and restore access to the existing completion, 2) Change the upper completion to align with current inflow performance, or 3) Salvage the wellbore above the existing completion to re-complete to another take-point in the existing reservoir or access recoverable reserves in a different reservoir. At least two-thirds of the competencies associated with drilling and initial completion are directly transferable to all well intervention options. There are unique cased hole logging and downhole equipment specific to a particular option. Wireline conveyed, and coiled tubing is more prevalent on well interventions and possible snubbing operations. Some problems that are routine to well interventions don’t exist before the initial completion, including scale, extensive corrosion, and wall loss due to tripping operations, paraffin, asphaltenes, hydrates, and other production byproducts. This unit can be easily adapted for a stand-alone presentation focused on the intervention options used in a specific region/well-type if there is a critical mass of participants. A total of 25 hours are included in this course with 11 hrs eLearning and 14 hrs virtual instructor-led sessions.

Target Audience

Designed for field supervisors and junior field supervisors who are being developed to be well site supervisors; entry-level well site field personnel; experienced personnel who are cross-training to move into a supervisory role and lead operations at the well site.

Virtual Instructor Led Training

During five sessions spanning fourteen virtual training hours, participants will meet with the instructor to go beyond the awareness competency provided in the eLearning courses on the range of well intervention methods to ensure alignment with the well interventions implemented in the participant’s region for a specific well type. The depth and granularity beyond commonly shared best practices across sedimentary basins are driven by the particular make-up of the cohort. Several diagnostic tools are used to assess “as is” conditions and adjust the capacity of the wellbore to contain pressures and flows for the remaining life of the well. Chemicals and processes to deal with the byproducts of producing fluid flow specific to well intervention are also addressed. Remediation techniques for cementing and downhole equipment repair and working pressure enhancements are reviewed along with the zonal isolation that accompanies re-purposing or recompleting the existing wellbore.

Back-to-Work Plan

Ideally, if the participant is currently assigned to implementing the drilling phase, a typical well intervention plan that follows the initial completion of the well is used for this unit. A completed procedure with morning report data is appropriate for the following. Three well intervention procedures representative of the three primary well intervention categories are reviewed if possible. Please describe each intervention. Discuss the method used and why this method was chosen. Describe the cost and risk of the technique selected; Note the problem or situation that initiated the intervention; Was the well under pressure or killed before the procedure and why? If the well was killed, how was this done? Is the intervention mechanically successful? Is the intervention successful from a productivity perspective? Tour the service providers’ shop, warehouse, and office, providing well intervention support. Interview a service provider representative familiar with the pros and cons of the methods: Slickline, electric line, coiled tubing, hydraulic workover units, and workover rigs. Draw the layout for each method, noting the major pieces of equipment in a few sentences. Meet with the company representative responsible for creating the well intervention procedures. Review the software and case histories that influence the details included in the well-intervention procedure.

A presentation recapping the learning and recommendations from each participant for this unit is made to a designee of the participant's manager.
