Understanding Electricity

e-Learning

About the eLearning Course

This course will teach you about basic electrical terms, the effect of electric current on the human body, and why electricity is a potential hazard. Additionally, you will learn about grounding electrical equipment, the proper precautions you must take when working with electrical equipment, and how to act in an emergency. Additionally, you will learn how electric power is distributed from a generating plant to a lease, and measuring electric usage, including units of measurement and how to read a meter.

Target Audience

Operations personnel who require a fundamental understanding of knowledge to operate and maintain facilities. Also suitable for maintenance and technician personnel whether new to their roles or seasoned experts looking to enhance their skills.

You Will Learn

Participants will learn how to:

  • Define resistance, voltage, and amperage, and accurately calculate their values using Ohm's law.
  • Calculate the body's resistance to electrical flow and describe the effects of shock.
  • Identify the muscles in the cardiovascular system.
  • Describe the effect of electrical shock on the cardiovascular system.
  • Describe how grounding provides shock protection.
  • Describe the proper precautions you should take to prevent shock.
  • Identify various warning signs and explain their meaning.
  • Describe the actions to take to react safely and quickly in an electrical emergency.
  • Identify the equipment and components of an electric power distribution system.
  • Describe the main pieces of transformer bank equipment.
  • Define single phase and three phase power systems.
  • Describe how magnetic fields rotate in a three-phase induction motor.
  • Define a kilowatt hour.
