Production Safety Equipment and Support Systems

e-Learning

About the eLearning Course

In this course, you will learn about process components, variables, and safety devices involved in offshore oil and gas production. Operators will also learn about safety requirements specified in API's Recommended Practice 14C, including identifying undesirable events, reading and interpreting Safety Flow Charts, and identifying components of the Emergency Shutdown System.

Target Audience

Operations personnel who require a fundamental understanding of knowledge to operate and maintain facilities. Also suitable for maintenance and technician personnel whether new to their roles or seasoned experts looking to enhance their skills.

You Will Learn

Participants will learn how to:

  • Identify symbols for controllers, transmitters, primary elements, and indicators.
  • Identify key process components on production platforms.
  • Identify the purpose and function of key safety devices.
  • Define the different types of undesirable events, including overpressure, leaks, liquid overflow, gas blowby, underpressure, excess temperature, direct ignition source, and excess combustible vapors.
  • Identify the purpose of a Safety Flow Chart.
  • Describe the modes of safety system operation.
  • Identify the conditions which require or exclude the installation of safety devices.
  • Identify the best location of protective shut-in action on process components and define cascading shut-in.
  • Describe the methods of ignition prevention and how to prevent accidents resulting from exposure to hot surfaces.
  • Describe the purpose and location of the ESD and subsurface safety valves.
  • Explain the purpose and types of fire detection systems.
  • Identify the purpose of containment systems and sumps.
  • Describe the differences between electric and pneumatic control signals.
  • Describe how pneumatic transmission works to control a process.
