Positive Displacement Compressors: Introduction

e-Learning

About the eLearning Course

In the hydrocarbon processing and production industry, gas is compressed for transportation to consuming markets and for use in processing operations. This program is an introduction to positive displacement compressors. In this program you will learn the operating principles of reciprocating compressors, the different types of rotary compressors, and techniques for controlling compressor output.

Target Audience

Operations personnel who require a fundamental understanding of knowledge to operate and maintain facilities. Also suitable for maintenance and technician personnel whether new to their roles or seasoned experts looking to enhance their skills.

You Will Learn

Participants will learn how to:

  • Explain the operating principles of a rotary and reciprocating compressor.
  • Describe the parts and function of a reciprocating compressor.
  • Describe the structure and function of a lobed blower and how it functions.
  • Identify the component parts and the way gas flows through a sliding-vane compressor.
  • Name the parts of a screw compressor, and how gas flows through it.
  • Summarize the flow path of gas through a liquid-piston compressor, and list its components.
  • Describe the compression cycle and identify parts of the cycle on P-V charts.
  • Summarize different factors that affect compressor performance.
  • Describe how to control compressor speed.
  • Explain the purpose and function of throttling.
  • Specify the best way to unload a compressor.
  • Indicate how compressor operation can be controlled by clearance.
