Employees at corporate offices are often tasked with preparing domestic or international hazardous material/dangerous good shipments. Because of these responsibilities, corporate employees must be familiar with international air and marine rules, and DOT regulations used for air, water, highway, rail and intermodal transportation domestically. This module is intended to provide an overview for an office advisor or one who arranges or assists in arranging hazardous materials/dangerous goods transportation.

Target Audience

Operators, technicians, and other professionals who require knowledge to operate and maintain facilities safely and effectively.

You Will Learn

Participants will learn how to:

  • Describe the DOT's primary responsibilities and objectives, including DOT agencies.
  • Define the different classes of hazardous materials and identify their labels.
  • Describe the requirements for shipping hazardous materials in small packages, bulk packages and containers and the preparation and use of shipping papers.
  • Read and understand basic requirements for proper marking, labeling, and placarding of hazardous materials and the North American Emergency Response Guide (ERG).
  • Describe TSA freight rail security requirements, including chain of custody, for rail security-sensitive materials shipments.
  • Define DOT’s Hazard Material Transportation Security requirements.
  • Describe the basic requirements for shipping dangerous goods by air, including the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA)Dangerous Goods Regulations.
  • Describe the basic requirements for shipping dangerous goods via ocean using International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) code.
  • Identify the purpose and function of performace oriented packaging.
  • Identify recordkeeping requirements related to hazmat/dangerous goods training.
