Heat Exchangers: Introduction

e-Learning

About the eLearning Course

In this course, you will learn about heat transfer as it is applied in modern refining techniques, conduction and convection as methods of heat transfer and heat transfer in tubes. You will also learn the various parts of heat exchangers and their functions, as well as the various types of shell and tube heat exchangers.

Target Audience

Operations personnel who require a fundamental understanding of knowledge to operate and maintain facilities. Also suitable for maintenance and technician personnel whether new to their roles or seasoned experts looking to enhance their skills.

You Will Learn

Participants will learn how to:

  • Describe the purpose, function, and principles of heat flow, including the different methods of heat transfer.
  • Identify the impact of type of flow on heat transfer through tubes.
  • Define parallel flow and counter flow.
  • Identify basic heat exchanger equipment.
  • Discuss the characteristics of a tube bundle.
  • Describe the tube sheet and joints.
  • Identify the different types of tube sheet layouts.
  • Describe the function and purpose of segmental baffles.
  • Explain the function and purpose of disc/doughnut and impingement baffles.
  • Discuss the function and purpose of longitudinal baffles.
  • Describe how to determine the effective heat transfer surface area.
  • Describe flow patterns through shell- and tube-side arrangements.
  • Identify the purpose and function of fixed tube sheets and U-tube exchangers.
  • Explain the purpose and function of floating head and split backing-ring exchangers.
  • Read and interpret TEMA's type designation for exchangers.
