Fire Fighting: Fuels and Combustion
e-Learning
About the eLearning Course
In this course, you will learn that fire is combustion requiring fuel, oxygen, and a source of ignition. You will also learn about the flammability of typical liquid and vapor fuels, the sources of oxygen, the sources of ignition, and the causes and effects of various kinds of explosions and detonations. Finally, you will learn the three ways of extinguishing fires—quenching, smothering, and starving—and the techniques of dispersing flammable vapors to keep them from igniting or re-igniting during a fire.
Target Audience
Operations personnel who require a fundamental understanding of knowledge to operate and maintain facilities. Also suitable for maintenance and technician personnel whether new to their roles or seasoned experts looking to enhance their skills. You Will Learn
Participants will learn how to:
- Identify the components of the fire triangle and define the five different classes of fire.
- Describe the characteristics of different types of fuel, including volatility, flammability, and combustion.
- Describe the characteristics of light volatile oils, including the flammable range and vapor pressure.
- Describe the characteristics of heavy oils, including flash point.
- Identify the main sources of oxygen and ignition.
- Identify the causes and prevention strategies for explosions and detonations.
- Identify the methods of extinguishment.
- Describe how specific gravity affects vapor dispersion.
- Describe your roles and responsibilities in fire fighting.
- Define the potential fire hazards in a processing facility.
