Project Management for Upstream Field Development – Well Site Supervisor
About the Course
This course is part of the Track 1: Well Site Supervisor Development Program. Well Site Supervisor Development Program - Track 1 Many industry professionals consider the primary skill shared amongst the drilling, completion, and well intervention phases to be “project management principles.” Each phase is reasonably described as continuous learning/improvement projects from one well to the next or even one hole interval to the next. Like Unit 12, understanding the Project Management principles and practices through “the eyes of major operators” improves the ability of company personnel at the rig site and office to capture accretive value on behalf of the customer. This unit provides targeted awareness competency related to project management to proactively collaborate with the wide range of operators in the industry, regardless of their specific project management governance. They are crucial to the operational excellence journey to approaching the technical limit for each pairing of well type, rig type, and rig crews. A total of 46 hours are included in this course with 29 hrs eLearning and 17 hrs virtual instructor-led sessions
Target Audience

Course Content
Virtual Instructor Led Training
During seven sessions spanning seventeen virtual training hours, participants will meet with the instructor principally to answer how the awareness training from the eLearning courses translates into the ongoing projects in each operating region represented by the participants. This dynamic interaction is tailored to the make-up of each cohort. These “life skills” go beyond current assignments at the well site. Identifying ongoing Project Issues and Challenges on current projects creates “on the job” context and application.
Back-to-Work Plan
Identify the similarities and significant differences between your company’s Startup process with the standard industrial project development system described in Session One. Does your company’s project governance differ from the operator governance illustrated in Session Two? Interview your manager or designee and learn why this difference exists. Both the alliance member company and the Operating Petroleum Company must manage risks. Write a one-page explanation (about 300 words) describing how your company’s well construction risk exposure differs from an oil company’s overall project risk exposure. Based on the Issues and Challenges session, list the top 5 challenges you want to address as a wellsite supervisor. Identify and document three areas where you can improve well construction projects related to drilling, completions, and/or well interventions using your new knowledge of industrial project management. Review all with your manager or designee.
