Descriptive Formation Fundamentals – Well Site Supervisor

Course

About the Course

This course is part of the Track 1: Well Site Supervisor Development Program. Well Site Supervisor Development Program - Track 1. Data capture for each hole interval is an integral part of all drilling operations. This Descriptive Formation Fundamentals Unit builds an awareness foundation for petrophysical, rock, and fluid properties is laid.  This includes the physics and chemistry associated with the various properties and how that interpreted data is integrated into well planning, drilling optimization, completions and well interventions. Wellbore stability and fracture gradient changes related to hole angle and the ripple effect on casing seat selection are addressed. The integration of this data into maintaining “life of well” integrity from the key components of casing, cement, and wellhead are also addressed. The impact on drilling fluid design and lost circulation options are also included. A total of 32 hours are included in this course with 23 hrs eLearning and 9 hrs virtual instructor-led sessions.

Target Audience

Designed for field supervisors and junior field supervisors who are being developed to be well site supervisors; entry-level well site field personnel; experienced personnel who are cross-training to move into a supervisory role and lead operations at the well site.

You Will Learn

  • Introduction and Overview of Petrophysics Core
  • Mud Logging, Coring, and Cased Hole Logging Core
  • Porosity Logging (Density, Neutron, and Sonic) Core
  • Gamma Ray and Spontaneous Potential Logging Core
  • Resistivity Logging Tools and Interpretation Core
  • Special Petrophysical Tools: NMR and Image Logs Core

Course Content

Virtual Instructor Led Training

During three sessions spanning nine virtual training hours, participants will meet with the instructor to clarify how to adapt the unit content to the well types specific to each participant in their operating area. The relevance of petrophysical data to each phase of drilling, completion, and well intervention is established. Operational considerations are also needed to ensure data quality is addressed.

Back-to-Work Plan

The scope of services covered in the BTW plan includes the full breadth of services available for all well types in a specific region.  Thorough discussions with service provider shop personnel, along with the company’s personnel on the software and case histories that support field development on their assigned well types provides a framing for future implementations for all phases of the well life.  This is enhanced by time with the company and/or operator reservoir engineering and geology representatives with a focus on log interpretation and usage of the data captured.

A presentation recapping the learning and recommendations from each participant for this unit is made to a designee of the participant's manager.
