Casing and Cementing Operations – Well Site Supervisor
About the Course
This course is part of the Track 1: Well Site Supervisor Development Program. Well Site Supervisor Development Program - Track 1. This Casing and Cementing Operations unit will ensure the design assumptions for “life of well” integrity are achieved by properly installing casing, cement, and wellhead components for each hole interval. “Zero defect” is particularly important for handling and making up each casing connection. Understanding the role of the open-hole section in serving as the relief valve with proper isolation from the cement and wellhead to complement the casing steel will consistently protect people, equipment, and the environment. Emphasis on “best practices” and debunking certain myths on cement displacement and sheaths are thoroughly discussed. The priorities of each hole interval are to comply with regulations and provide the appropriate zonal isolation to protect fresh water and royalty owners. A total of 35 hours are included in this course with 15 hrs eLearning and 20 hrs virtual instructor-led sessions.
Target Audience
Designed for field supervisors and junior field supervisors who are being developed to be well site supervisors; entry-level well site field personnel; experienced personnel who are cross-training to move into a supervisory role and lead operations at the well site.

Course Content
Virtual Instructor Led Training
During six sessions spanning twenty virtual training hours, participants will meet with the instructor to discuss broadly and specifically their well types in their respective operating areas, basic casing properties, handling guidelines, and casing connections considerations to ensure “as is” aligns with the design assumptions. Assurance of “life of well” well integrity specific to each hole interval is addressed, including staying within kick tolerance to interval TD. Hole conditioning options are addressed before primary cement placement and contingencies when “as is” don’t match design assumptions. Cement evaluation, remediation, and confirmation of installed casing burst capacity before drilling ahead in the next hole interval are discussed. The various tools and attachments are reviewed for value-adding usage. Multiple scenarios for remedial cementing options during drilling, completion, and/or well intervention phases are also examined. Proper connection selection for compressive loads for uncemented casing sections near the wellhead is addressed, along with drift joints, which are additional “best practices” considered. Wellheads, hangers, and liner hanger options aligned with the company’s portfolio well types are reviewed.
Back-to-Work Plan
This unit’s BTW plan is amongst the most robust of all the units, engaging the company office, service provider office, lab, shop, bulk handling, and rig personnel. In addition to understanding the “basis of design” assumptions, a thorough review of prior failures in offset wells of the same well type is emphasized. The detailed tasks associated with the service provider lab seek to minimize the “black box” effect associated with each property of the cement slurry. An open, frank discussion on cost drivers and quality assurance measures throughout the value chain is crucial.
A presentation recapping the learning and recommendations from each participant for this unit is made to a designee of the participant's manager.
